How To Make Your Kava
Ingredients and equipment:
- 8-16 grams of Fijian Kava depending on your desired potency.
- 250ml of room temperature water or 15ml of water per 1g of kava.
- Strainer bag, muslin or cheesecloth for straining.
- Bowl or Tanoa for mixing Kava and water.
Remember, kava can have different effects on different people, and it’s always a good idea to start with a small amount if you’re new to it to gauge your tolerance and sensitivity. Also, consult with a healthcare professional if you have any concerns about kava consumption, especially if you’re taking medications or have underlying health conditions.
Directions
Step 1:
Place 8-16 grams of Fijian Kava into a strainer bag or cheesecloth.
Step 2:
Place the kava powder into your mixing bowl. Pour your preferred amount of water over the kava. Stir or knead the mixture vigorously for about 5-10 minutes. This helps to extract the active compounds (kavalactones) from the kava powder.
Step 3:
Squeeze and knead the bag or cloth to extract as much liquid as possible. Once done, remove the cloth containing the powder from the bowl. This liquid is your kava drink.
Step 4:
Pour the strained kava into cups or coconut shells if you have them. Traditionally, kava is served in a half coconut shell called a "bilo". Optionally, you can mix in coconut milk or another flavoring agent to taste.
Step 5:
Drink your kava slowly and mindfully. It's common to share kava with friends or as part of a social gathering. Kava has a relaxing effect and may take around 20-30 minutes to feel its full effects.
